We cannot let Royal Caribbean build its Royal Beach Club on Paradise Island without proper environmental oversight or public input.
We are calling on the government to carefully consider the environmental impact and give Bahamians an opportunity to weigh in before the development goes forward.
The Royal Beach Club would bring massive crowds, infrastructure, and machinery to this small, naturally beautiful area, generating waste and pollution while straining local resources. Without a robust plan to manage all of the people, buildings, energy and waste, the Royal Beach Club could cause irreparable damage to marine life and the reef on the Western edge of the Island. Improper management could permanently harm underground water sources for the Island and leave Paradise Island and Nassau residents living under constant threat of an environmental catastrophe.
The law on major developments like Royal Caribbean’s Beach Club is clear. It requires a public consultative process so that Bahamians can have a voice in the process and a thorough environmental review process. But right now, the project is set to sail through without public scrutiny,or a real plan by the Department of Environmental Planning and Protection. We need to make sure Royal Caribbean follows the law and builds its Beach Club in a way that protects the environment on Paradise Island. That won’t happen unless Prime Minister Brave Davis follows the law and brings transparency to the process so Bahamians have a voice.
The Bahamas’ natural beauty is what makes this our home and powers our economy. Without real oversight from the government, or public input on this massive development, our way of life is at risk.
We’ve seen this story before. Governments ram through developments from multinational corporations without any public input or consultation and limited oversight – and the subsequent damage that is done to our islands. From catastrophic oil spills to greenhouse gasses emitted by big polluters that are causing sea level rise, our way of life in The Bahamas is at risk from companies who are focused on profits over environmental protection. That’s why it is critical that our elected leaders and the government ensure Royal Caribbean’s Royal Beach Club is built and run in a way that allows everyone to enjoy the natural beauty of Paradise Island, so Bahamians can live, work, and play in our community for generations to come.
